Stockport 1-1 Blues: Still on a run, just

Both sides came into the game with injury problems, and the much discussed final Stockport game for Louie Barry didn’t materialise, yet both sides put on a battle of a game.

Our draw away at Stockport on New Years’ Day takes us to 10 games unbeaten with 8 wins and 2 draws, but it was hard fought and could’ve easily ended in defeat at the death.

Both sides came into the game with injury problems, and the much discussed final Stockport game for Louie Barry didn’t materialise, yet both sides put on a battle of a game.

Blues started the brighter of the two, putting together some neat passing moves. In the first 5 minutes, Willumsson played a fantastic through ball from near the dugouts to play through Taylor Gardner-Hickman one on one. He couldn’t bury his chance, but after some scrapping for the loose ball, Willumsson was there again to lay it off to Alfie May, who took a touch and curled the ball into the far corner with his weaker foot to put Blues ahead.

We couldn’t have asked for a better start, but Stockport responded well and took control of the ball and limited our possession to under 50% for the first time in League One this season. They didn’t create much though, and looked open on the counter. Blues looked to exploit this just before half-time after battling from Gardner-Hickman and a slip from Ethan Pye let Willumsson in on the counter with May ahead of him. He laid a ball off to his striker, forced May slightly wide and his shot was well saved by the feet of Hinchliffe.

Stockport had 52% possession, but didn’t threaten Blues in the first half.

Half time: Stockport 0-1 Blues (May)

However, the second half was a different story. Stockport switched shape and pressed Blues relentlessly the entire half, preventing our usual passing moves from establishing dominance and pinning us back for much of the half, whipping balls into the box with frequency. Jack Diamond’s low effort from just inside the box flew just wide, but Blues repelled most waves of attack without conceding many chances.

We did have one counter where Stansfield ran at the back line scrambling to recover, and the substitute Scott Wright found himself in acres of space to his right. Stanno unfortunately decided to try for goal himself and it was easily blocked – 2-0 here could’ve put the game to bed.

Instead, Stockport’s pressure continued, and just before the 80th minute they were level. Ryan Rydel’s cross was whipped to the far post, and Macauley Southam-Hales climbed over Cochrane to head home. You couldn’t argue against Stockport deserving the equaliser, despite the valiant defending displayed by Blues throughout the second half.

A few minutes later they could’ve been ahead. The ball fell to Southam-Hales on the edge of the box and his half-volley was struck with venom, but couldn’t beat Allsop’s far post.

The referee, who had a poor game and didn’t deal with the physical challenges flying in during the game, signalled for 5 minutes added time at the end of the 90. Blues were still getting pressed right until the final whistle, yet persisted with trying to play out the back with the long ball not proving to be effective. Bielik made a serious error in judgement on the 93rd minute, and passed back to Allsop and sold him short with Wootton meeting the ball first. Allsop was stranded and the goal was gaping, until Klarer came flying in to deny what would’ve been a certain goal. Krystian took responsibility post match and thanked his teammate for saving his blushes.

It was a lacklustre, leggy performance from a Blues side that has played 4 games in 9 days. For the first time this season, we ended the match with less possession than our opponents and despite clear cut chances being equally distributed between the sides, you felt that Stockport probably deserved more than a singular point.

Blues travel to Wigan on Saturday, if the games goes ahead and the flooding clears up. Wigan’s New Year’s Day fixture was postponed, and they’ll have had a full week rest prior to our fixture. Davies might find that he needs to rotate his players to recoup energy levels that we lacked in the second half against Stockport after a tricky schedule.

Blues are still on an unbeaten run, winning 8 and drawing 2 of our last 10, but our performance levels will need to be higher against Wigan, as Wycombe won to reclaim top spot on goal difference. A third draw or a defeat wouldn’t be disastrous, but Davies will want his side to bounce back with a win to keep the points flowing onto the league table.

Ratings

Starting XI

Ryan Allsop: 6

A solid display from the Blues keeper, yet nothing too outstanding in or out of possession. Couldn't do anything about the Stockport goal.

Krystian Bielik: 6

Bielik defended strongly for most of the game, but gets marked down for his backpass at the end that very nearly resulted in a late Stockport winner.

Christoph Klarer: 8 - Man of the Match

Brick wall at the back in a game where we were desperate for him to put in a performance, being under pressure for most of the 90. His last ditch challenge to prevent the winner as a result of Bielik's aforementioned mistake earns him man of the match.

Ben Davies: 7

Solid at the back, a typical Ben Davies performance in blue and white. Weathered a storm. Wasn't involved in the conceded goal.

Alex Cochrane: 5

One of my favourite players, but had a quiet game and was pinned back after starting the game getting very high up the pitch. Got to be stronger in the air for the goal; it's not the first time he's been beaten at the back post in the air this season.

Tomoki Iwata: 6

Tomoki couldn't get a hold of the game in midfield and was pressed well by Stockport. Covered plenty of ground defensively. I wonder if he'll be rested Saturday after playing a lot of football.

Paik Seung-Ho: 6

Paik also failed to have his usual impact on the game. Dug in, but couldn't impact our possession game and ended up a passenger.

Taylor Gardner-Hickman: 6

Taylor looked really solid in the right wing role before his withdrawal. Did his job defensively - perhaps would've blocked the cross for the Stockport goal had he been on the pitch. May saved his blushes early on as he squandered a 1 on 1, but I thought overall he looked very competent in a position he's rarely played.

Willum Þór Willumsson: 7

After a string of poor performances, Thor had a strong outing. Picked up an assist in the first 5 minutes and could've had another had May taken his chance late on in the first half. Looked tidy in possession, creative, and didn't give the ball away as much as he has in recent weeks.

Jay Stansfield: 6

Stanno looked leggy from early on, not pressing with the same intensity we've come to know from him, and was withdrawn after looking completely drained. Didn't have a great impact, and you wonder what might've happened had he laid the ball off to Wright in the second half instead of trying to shoot through 2/3 Stockport defenders.

Alfie May: 7

Excellent finish for his goal, pressed well. Could've potentially had a second just before half time but Willum's pass forced him slightly wide. Got unlucky with a couple of offsides in the first half too. Had no chance in the aerial battle as Blues went direct to avoid the Stockport press.

Subs

Marc Leonard: 6

Leonard came on for Willumsson in the 65th minute, after being part of a trio that looked ready to enter the fray 10 minutes earlier. He didn't have his usual impact off the bench in a game where Blues couldn't scramble to get control.

Lyndon Dykes: 5

Dykes was brought on to offer an aerial outlet and to get Blues up the pitch without playing out from the back. Like Leonard, he failed to have the desired impact and was mostly used as a panic option as we defended in the second period.

Scott Wright: 5

While it was fantastic to see Wright again on the bench and even better to get some minutes, he looked like a player who's just come back from a 2 month injury. He looked reluctant to push himself too hard, and wasn't as dogged defensively as TGH who he replaced. He was on the receiving end of a few strong challenges which probably dampened his appetite further. Hopefully he can get back to full fitness quickly and hit the form he was starting to hit prior to his injury.

Ethan Laird: 6

Laird replaced Cochrane late on and showed some extra physicality defensively. I wonder had this sub been made earlier once it was clear we weren't going to gain control of the game, could the goal have been prevented with Laird's superior aerial battling? Hindsight is 20/20 though - this wasn't something I thought of during the match.

Luke Harris: N/A

Harris replaced the struggling Stansfield in the last few minutes, but if ever there was a game less suited to him it was this one. Failed to make an impact.
